Liver function tests also known as liver enzyme tests, are blood tests that are used to evaluate the functioning of the liver and detect any abnormalities. These tests measure levels of enzymes, proteins, and other substances produced by the liver. It helps to diagnose liver diseases, monitor and assess the severity of liver damage.
Following parameters are included:
1. Alanine transaminase (ALT/SGPT): This enzyme is found primarily in the liver and is released into the bloodstream when the liver is damaged. Elevated levels of ALT may indicate liver injury or disease.
2. Aspartate transaminase (AST/SGOT): This enzyme is found in the liver, heart, muscles, and other tissues. Elevated levels of AST may indicate liver damage, but can also be elevated in conditions affecting other organs.
3. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP): This enzyme is found in the liver, bones, and other tissues. Elevated levels of ALP may indicate liver or bone disease.
4. Bilirubin: Bilirubin is a waste product produced by the liver when it breaks down old red blood cells. Elevated levels of bilirubin may indicate liver disease or other conditions affecting the liver’s ability to process bilirubin.
5. Albumin and total protein: These tests measure the levels of proteins produced by the liver. Abnormal levels may indicate liver disease or other conditions affecting protein production.
