About GLYCATED HAEMOGLOBIN/ GLYCOSYLATED HAEMOGLOBIN/ HBA1C (Diabetes Test)

The HbA1C test, also known as hemoglobin A1C or glycated hemoglobin test, is a common blood test used to diagnose and monitor diabetes. It measures the average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months by determining the percentage of hemoglobin that is glycated (attached to glucose).

This test is important because it provides a more comprehensive picture of an individual’s blood sugar control compared to daily blood sugar monitoring. It is typically used to diagnose diabetes, assess diabetes management, and monitor the effectiveness of treatment plans.

The results of the HbA1C test are reported as a percentage, with normal levels typically falling below 5.7%. Prediabetes is diagnosed if the HbA1C level is between 5.7% and 6.4%, while diabetes is diagnosed if the level is 6.5% or higher. This reference range is subject to variation as per guidelines used or preferred by clinician.

It is recommended that individuals with diabetes have their HbA1C levels checked regularly, usually every 3-6 months, to monitor their blood sugar control and adjust treatment plans as needed. Keeping HbA1C levels within target range can reduce the risk of complications associated with diabetes.
